I love everything about fall: the colors, the smells, the food. One of our family’s favorite things about the upcoming season is the fun fall crafts that go with it. If you’re looking for fall crafts for kids, here’s an owl craft that I recently did that turned out so great that I used it to brighten up our fall decor.

Check out this video for a quick demo of how I made this adorable wood circle owl craft, and read on to find out how you can create your own wood circle owl with your kids!

Easy Fall Crafts for Kids: Wooden Circle Owl

What You Need

To create this fall craft for kids, you will need these items:

  1. A Small Wooden Circle Slice: I bought mine from a local craft store. You can choose whatever size you like. Mine were about 2-3 inches.
  2. Wiggle Eyes: Choose a size that matches your wood circle. I got a variety pack with lots of different sizes to try.
  3. Craft Foam : Choose a color for the beak. I chose orange, but you can use any color you like.
  4. Felt in 2-3 Colors: This is for the wings and ears. I used a dark brown for the main part of the wings, and then I found this awesome gold glitter foam. The gold glitter accents ended up being by favorite part of the craft, because it really made it pop!
  5. Pipe Cleaner: This is for the feet. I used dark brown, but you can choose any color you want.
  6. Glue: I used a hot glue gun, which worked great. However, if you’re doing a fall craft for kids, you want to make it kid-friendly by using either Elmer’s glue or a liquid wood glue. The drying time takes longer, but it lets your kids be more involved. If you choose to use hot glue, you can let your child do the cutting and designing of the owl while you do the gluing.

Make It Your Own

After making this owl craft, I  realized that there are endless ideas for materials and colors that you can use. Let your kids pick out the colors for the wings, feet, and beak. You certainly don’t have to be limited to brown or gray. Your owl could be teal, or pink, or any color you like!

Also, you can experiment with different materials for the wings. Craft feathers might make a great addition to your wood circle owl. Fall crafts for kids work best when you let your kids be the designers and have fun!

How to Make Your Wood Circle Owl Fall Craft for Kids

1. Make Templates

The shape and size of your wings, ears, and beak will depend greatly on the size of your wooden circle. I recommend using plain paper to sketch out the shape of each part. Then, cut out the templates and place them on the wooden circle to make sure you are satisfied with how it looks. Once you have the perfect shape, THEN trace the template and cut it out of the felt or foam. Here are the shapes you need to make a template for:

a. A Triangle for the beak

b. 2 Larger tear drop shapes and 2 slightly smaller teardrop shapes for the layers of the wings

c. 2 Triangles for the outer ears, and 2 slightly smaller triangles for the inner ears

Older kids can draw their own templates, and you can assist younger children if needed. Remember, the shapes don’t have to be perfect!

2. The Eyes and Beak

Trace and cut the triangle beak from the craft foam. Position the wiggle eyes and the beak where you want them to be on the wooden circle . Glue into place.

3. The Wings

Trace the slightly larger wing shape onto the felt color of your choice for the back layer of the wings. I used dark brown for mine. Cut out the wing shapes and position them on the owl.

Trace the slightly smaller shape onto your second color of felt. Cut out the smaller shape.

Glue the larger wing layers on each side first, and then glue the smaller shape on top of the first layer on each side.

4. The Ears

Trace and cut the 2 triangles for the outer ears onto a piece of felt.

Trace and cut the 2 smaller triangles for the inner ears out of a different colored piece of felt.

Glue the smaller triangles onto the larger triangles.

Glue both ears to the back of the wooden circle. *Important note: Make sure that you flip the ears over before you glue them so that the smaller part of the inner ear is facing the front of the owl.

5. The Feet

Cut two pieces off of the pipe cleaner: One piece should be about 2 inches and the other should be about 1 inch. This is for one foot.

Cross the smaller piece of pipe cleaner over the longer piece about 1/3 of the way down the length of the longer piece. (So, a little more than half way down)

Twist the smaller piece around the larger piece one time. You should have a shape that looks like 3 toes. Bend and shape them as needed.

Trim the legs or toes if needed to get the right size.

Repeat for the second foot.

Glue both legs on the back side of the wooden circle

6. Optional: Create a Hanger

If you’d like, you can also glue a small loop of ribbon, twine, or burlap to the back of the owl so that you can hang it and use it for fall decor. One of the best things about fall crafts for kids is that you can also use them for decorations.

So that’s it! A fun and easy fall craft for kids that will look adorable as a part of your home decor. Have fun!
